About the works
In Beyond the veil, beneath the fingertips, Sarah Murray’s distinctive soft layering of colours creates landscape scenes that float in and out of focus and reality. Washes of hue and form swim into each other, but look a little longer and figures emerge, interacting with one another and the landscape around them. Murray uses references to religious art-historical paintings as a grounding for their exploration, merging this with their abstracted gestural mark-making and biomorphic forms.
From Murray’s physical and site-specific practice emerge embodied works that present the viewer with visceral reactions to the painted scenes; whether awe, fear or longing for the symbols of nature and the divine. Using patterns from the Australian landscape on a micro scale, works shift in and out of understanding; are we looking at the trails of a Scribbly Gum Moth, or an aerial view of a rolling landscape? Is it a view common to our everyday lives, or one more heavenly?
About the artist
Sarah Murray is a Canberra-based artist, working on Ngunnawal and Ngambri country. They primarily work in painting and drawing, using acrylic, oils and charcoal. Sarah uses vibrant colours and expressive mark-making, creating a balance between representation and abstraction. Sarah’s work explores the embodied experience of landscape, seeking to describe a physical connection to space and place. Additionally, in recent work Sarah has been exploring themes of the sublime, spirituality and sin. Since graduating with first-class honours from the ANU School of Art and Design in 2021, Sarah has participated in various exhibitions across Canberra, interstate, and internationally, and has created public murals in the ACT and NSW.

About the curator
Ivy Moore is an emerging curator, originally from Guruk/Port Macquarie, and now residing in Kamberri/Canberra. She is passionate about environmental advocacy and climate change activism; something she seeks to encourage in artists and audiences by curating shows that explore connections between humans and the natural environment. Ivy has previously curated Tensions and Connections: Mediations with Nature at Canberra Contemporary: Platform.
