Causeway Hall Centenary Celebration

We’re throwing a 100th birthday bash for the venue! It’ll be a musical feast with a history!

SATURDAY 7TH MARCH 2PM – IT’S TIME FOR THE TELEGRAM FROM THE KING!

On 7 March 2026, we will come together at ACT Hub to celebrate a remarkable milestone — the 100th birthday of Causeway Hall, one of Canberra’s oldest and most cherished community venues. Constructed by local volunteers with materials provided by the Federal Capital Commission in 1925, Causeway Hall was conceived at a time when Canberra was still finding its feet as Australia’s new capital. It was built as the first and largest purpose-built hall for the fledgling community, and for many years served as the city’s principal place for concerts, dances, silent film screenings, sporting events and social gatherings. It remains the last substantial building from the original Causeway settlement and a testament to the spirit of community cooperation that shaped early Canberra.

Canberra City Band concert

That spirit continues today as Causeway Hall blossoms into its role as home to Canberra’s vibrant independent theatre scene. To mark this centenary, we are hosting a special Centenary Concert with the Canberra City Band, recalling the hall’s first public performances and celebrating its enduring place in our cultural life. The Canberra City Band were the very first group to perform in the hall, at the hall’s first public event on 28th November 1925 and at its opening on 6th February 1926.

The Canberra City Band will be playing a collection of show tunes and well-loved favourites, with guest vocalists (and Hub stalwarts) Louiza Blomfield, Jarrad West, Dave Collins, Janie Lawson and Joe Dinn.

Photographic Exhibition

Alongside the music, we will present a curated historical display of archival photographs and stories that trace the hall’s journey from a bustling early entertainment hub to its current life as ACT Hub, and highlight the hall’s rich history and social significance.

Supported by the ACT Heritage Grants Program, this festive community celebration is both a look back at a century of shared experiences, and a joyful acknowledgment of all that this space means to artists and audiences today.

Cross the bridge between the past and the present and share in a moment of living history.
