The Rivals

Written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan
Adapted and Directed by Jarrad West
Presented by Everyman Theatre

Wit meets wickedness in Everyman Theatre’s bold new adaptation of The Rivals — a gloriously queer, modern retelling of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy of manners.

Director Jarrad West drags Bath’s most chaotic lovers, liars and social climbers into the 21st century, re-arming them with smartphones, sharper tongues, and a deliciously diverse cast of characters.

Romantic deception, identity games and theatrical excess collide as Lydia Languish, Jack Absolute, Mr. Fag, Mrs Malaprop and company navigate love’s minefield with fresh queer energy and a distinctly contemporary pulse.

Expect razor-fast comedy, larger-than-life personalities, and the kind of camp swagger that only Everyman can deliver. A celebration of love, language and the glorious messiness of desire — this is The Rivals like you’ve never seen it before.
